 English Abstract:

Drug use is an issue that draws lots of attention. Previous studies have indicated that drug recidivists have low self-control, and are used to using drugs for escaping from stress. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate how peer influence and low self-control affect drug recidivism. Using random sampling, this present study collected 400 drug recidivists in Yunlin Prison of Taiwan. Response rate and usable rate are 97.25% and 78.14%, respectively. Drug recidivism as the dependent variable, regression analyses demonstrated that peer influence and low self-control accounted for 66.4% of the variances. Peer influence is, in particular, the strongest predictor of drug recidivism. The author suggests that professionals should help drug recidivists rebuild a good new interpersonal network in order to lower the influence of deviant peers. Also, more programs for stress relief should be held, and irrational thinking should be modified. Then, drug recidivism may be prevented and the way for social rehabilitation can be paved.
