With the growing diversity in family structures due to social changes comes the increasing cases of domestic violence resulting from financial difficulties, stress, parenting challenges, and other family issues. With the changing of times, domestic violence is no longer considered a private matter but one of public importance. Adolescents living under domestic violence are referred to as abused adolescents.
The strengths perspective approach has been adopted in Taiwan for many years and has shown different results and discoveries in different fields. There are, however, fewer studies on taking the strengths perspective approach in group intervention. In this study, eight abused adolescents were selected through purposive sampling as the subjects, where the change in empowerment of the adolescents after participating in a six-month, strength-based group intervention service program was explored. This study involved both qualitative and qualitative analysis. The qualitative analysis examined the group interview conducted before and after participation, the observations made during the intervention, and the observation and feedback from the participating co-leaders; for the quantitative analysis, a scaled-response empowerment questionnaire was applied before, during, and after group participation to examine the changes in empowerment among the participants. This allowed us to learn more about the intervention of strengths perspective groups and its results and provide suggestions for future practitioners.
This study has found that participants in the strength-based group scored higher in personal, interpersonal, and sociopolitical empowerment after group participation, with personal empowerment showing the highest increase in score. The participants generally had a high opinion of the group and believed the group allowed them to freely express themselves, encouraged interpersonal interactions, and empowered them to face life events and challenges. Through the formulation and discussion of common goals and desires, group intervention can effectively empower participants and boost their confidence.
The author of this study suggests the incorporation of strength-based group intervention service in future family intervention service programs. Furthermore, when planning a group, two or more leaders should be appointed for mutual coordination and for helping participants discuss their common goals and desires; leaders should also use strengths language to create a strength-based setting and environment. The author believes the keys to the successful execution of a group intervention are flexible leaders, understanding of participants’ backgrounds via pre-intervention interviews, accepting resolutions made jointly in group discussion, and overcoming challenges together. Most importantly, the empowerment of adolescents through day-to-day interactions is critical to a group’s success.
