This study examined the effect of supervised visitation for witnesses, in particular children, of domestic violence. The aim of this investigation was to increase understanding of the psychosocial impact on children who have witnessed domestic violence, to explore the impact of supervised visitationin both adult and minor victims, and to facilitate improvement in supervised visitation.

Analyses were conducted on: 1) the impact on children who have witnessed domestic violence prior to receiving visitation services; 2) the view towards supervised visitation and the familial relationship during the service period for separated parents; and 3) perception of victims of domestic violence towards supervised visitation.

Consistent with previous research, results of the study found domestic violence to significantly impact the entire family. However, after receiving, parents visited their children more regularly, with the need for the presence of a person trusted by the child victim. Outcomes of visitation by the separated parent showed an initial rejection of the parent by the child, and the relationship needing to be re-established. Moreover, social and psychological services, as well as cooperation of parents, were instrumental in managing victims’ emotions and in assisting recovery from the traumatic situations experienced by the children.

This study also found that female adults and children who had witnessed domestic violence were more negatively impacted than males, thus suggestion female victims required additional attention and service. Social worker must has gender perspective, to care about male emotions, that will help father to overcome the predicament of visitation. Additionally, the parent with custody (most commonly the mother) is often viewed by society as contributing to alienation of the child from the separated parent, and regarded as failing to cooperate with supervised visitation and inhibiting recovery of the child.

Acknowledgement of emotions expressed by the child (in particular male victims), recognizing them as individuals, as well as assessing the family environment, were likely to enhance the parent-child relationship, and subsequently improve prognosis of the child’s recovery process.
